In April 2017, the second annual Merlyn Myer Music Commission was awarded to stunning jazz pianist and composer Andrea Keller.
Initiated by the Merlyn Myer Fund and co-developed by Melbourne Recital Centre, the commission is an important opportunity for female Australian composers.
The Merlyn Myer commission seeks to support brilliant female composers and provide a platform for the expression of their experience. Andrea was selected from a competitive field and the judges felt that her proposed project was both fresh and original.
Andrea’s new work for piano, percussion, clarinet, flute and electronics was premiered by Sydney-based champions of adventurous new music, Ensemble Offspring on Tuesday 28 November in the Salon, as part of the Ensemble’s year of featuring all female composers. It will go on to be performed in Sydney as part of Ensemble Offspring’s series there.‘My deepest gratitude to the Merlyn Myer Fund for their ongoing generosity to the arts, particularly in honouring me with this invitation to create a new work for Ensemble Offspring. This experience will no doubt hold great significance for me, through the provision of an invaluable period of growth and experimentation, and the precious opportunity to nurture creativity and musical relationships.’ Andrea Keller.
