James Morrison with his Academy Jazz Orchestra

‘Wizardry on trumpet’ Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune

Formally acknowledged as a national treasure, James Morrison is renowned worldwide for his sheer brilliance as a jazz musician and entertainer. Ray Brown called him ‘The Genius’ and Dizzy Gillespie called him ‘One of the Best’. Wynton Marsalis sums it up: ‘Man, James Morrison can play!’ His recordings are bestsellers and James works with the cream of the world’s best performers – including the new generation of Australia’s finest jazz musicians.

James Morrison Academy Jazz Orchestra (JMAJO) is the premier performing ensemble of the internationally acclaimed James Morrison Academy (JMA) program. James Morrison himself directs the Orchestra. JMAJO, a 20-piece big jazz band, is noted for its exceptional individual musicianship and tight ensemble performance. Its concerts feature standards made famous by international jazz greats, original compositions and arrangements by Australian artists, and a wealth of new work written by current and former JMA students.

Although only founded in 2015, JMAJO tours Australia every year visiting major venues around the country, including Sydney’s The Basement, Melbourne’s Bennett’s Lane, the Gold Coast Arts Centre and the Adelaide Festival Centre.

To date, the JMAJO has performed alongside Grammy-winner Wycliffe Gordon, Grammy nominees the One O’Clock Lab Band, Aria-winner Kate Ceberano and Australian Jazz Award winner Olivia Chindamo.

James Morrison’s virtuosity was of course discovered at a tender age to the delight of jazz lovers worldwide. At age nine he formed his first band and at 13 he was playing professionally in nightclubs. His international career developed just as quickly. At age 16 James debuted in the U.S.A. with a breathtaking concert at the Monterey Jazz Festival. His affinity and passion for nurturing young rising jazz stars is unequalled.

James’ contagious enthusiasm for his Academy Jazz Orchestra imbues each concert with a uniquely inspirational momentum that doesn’t let up. When asked, ‘What is there left to do?’ James’ reply is typically: ‘This is just the warm up!’
