With applications for the 2021 Newsboys Regional Music Award now open, we thought we’d chat with last year’s award winner – trumpet player Trish Thompson.
Trish hails from Portland in Victoria’s west and she had a lot to say about the Newsboys prize, an all expenses paid musical week in Melbourne.
What did you enjoy most about the Newsboys Regional Music Award prize?
Everything about the week in Melbourne was awesome. The opportinuty to meet, eat, and play with professionals in the music industry truly gave me the boost I needed, and a fast tracked week of education and life lessons! Above all it was pretty amazing to attend that many performance in one week, and although I don’t like having favourites, the MSO rehearsal and Andrea Keller Trio would have to be my top two concerts. The performances and lessons were all so different, and covered a wide range of the possible pathways within the industry.
What did you learn from your time in Melbourne?
Whilst in Melbourne, I had the amazing opportunity to learn about the music industry from all angles. With professional trumpet lessons from various city based educators covering both classical and jazz repertoire, learning techniques to improve playing, lunch with mentors where I was able to create relationships and gain contacts in the field and ask questions, and finally the chance to watch amazing performaces in multiple styles. The week also gave me the chance to learn bits and pieces about the city lifestyle e.g. public transport. From my time in Melbourne, I was able to walk away feeling reassured and excited about a future in the music industry, and eager to get started and put in the hard yards!
Any thoughts for the Newsboys Foundation who fund this program?
I can’t thank them enough for the opportunites you have provided. To fund a whole week’s experience in the city is unbelievable, and the work that the foundation do to give chances to rural Victoria country kids is absolutely incredible. I’m so appreciative for everything I had the chance to see and learn, and will be forever grateful for the education I received.
Applications are now open for the Newsboys Regional Music Award, a music specialist prize for applicants who live in, and attend a Victorian Government school in, rural or regional Victoria.
Competition applications close Saturday 19 September 2020 at midnight.
