Steinway Giving Circle

Expanding the Centre’s musical possibilities

On the Centre’s 10th Anniversary year, the Steinway Giving Circle came together to help us purchase a new Steinway Model C grand piano in order to expand the musical possibilities at Melbourne Recital Centre.

We raised $250,000 towards the purchase of this new instrument and received the support of piano lovers across our community who made an important impact on the Centre’s capacity to support pianists of all career stages.

This new instrument is opening the Primrose Potter Salon up to a wide range of new repertoire and education opportunities and more:

  • Allow for the presentation of works from the extensive two piano repertoire on matching instruments
  • Provide artists with a choice of Steinway pianos for recitals in the Primrose Potter Salon, just as a choice of Model D pianos is provided for performances in the Elisabeth Murdoch Hall
  • Allow for two matching Steinways to be made available for master classes so that both student and teacher can work on matching instruments
  • Provide a Steinway piano for use in the Primrose Potter Salon that is fewer than 10 years old. Whilst the current instrument has been maintained to an extremely high standard, pianos do begin to deteriorate from elite level concert conditions after approximately a decade of heavy use. The new instrument will help ensure that the high reputation of the Melbourne Recital Centre is maintained among local and international artists and audiences
  • Allow the Centre to offer the use of the older model C instrument to schools and student groups, whilst ensuring that the new instrument is reserved only for professional artists.
  • Allow the Centre to make the older Model C available to contemporary artists wanting to use a ‘prepared’ piano for more experimental works by adjusting the piano strings in unusual ways.
