With applications for the 2027 Accelerando Program now open, we thought we’d chat with program alumni James Caddie. Studying Jazz and Improvisation at the University of Melbourne, he is a versatile drummer forging his own creative path in the industry. As part of the Accelerando program, James was involved in industry workshops, instrumental lessons, mentor sessions and a performance in the Primrose Potter Salon.
When were you part of the Accelerando program?
2022, while I was in year 12.
What are you doing now?
I’m currently in my last year of a Bachelor of Music at the University of Melbourne, majoring in jazz and improvisation. I also teach drum lessons privately in Blackburn.
When did you first start playing?
The spark was ignited when I was 3 years old when my parents bought me a toy drum, though it wasn’t until I turned 7 that I started formal drum lessons.
Who are your musical heroes?
Through my teenage years I’d have to say that Dave Weck, Benny Greb and Carter Beauford were three drummers that I really looked up to. I still greatly admire the drummers that have shaped me as a musician but, while at Uni, I’ve been heavily influenced by Philly Joe Jones.
What has been your performance highlight so far?
Probably a very recent performance on the 18th of July (6 days before writing this). I had the honour of sharing the stage at Uptown Jazz Café with some of Australia’s best jazz musicians: Carl Mackey (Sax), Mat Jodrell (Trumpet), Harry Morrison (Bass) and Harry Mitchell (Piano).
What did you enjoy the most about the Accelerando program?
I loved everything about the program and the concert at the end of the year was a standout, but what I most enjoyed were my drum lessons with Darryn Farrugia.
What skills did you gain from having sessions with some of Australia's top performers and educators?
I took a lot away from the masterclass with Susan Eldridge on the business side of the industry. She spoke on topics such as finances, networking and music-adjacent work. My lessons with Darryn were fantastic. He worked with me towards making myself a more polished musician.
What is next for you in your music journey?
More gigs, more recording sessions, tours if the opportunity arises, and passing what I have learnt onto the next generation in my teaching life.

Accelerando is an incredible program that everyone should audition for. It’s jam-packed with opportunities, information and experiences that are hard to come by elsewhere. Accelerando will challenge you as a musician and leave you with a broader outlook and clearer view of the music scene.
