Details

A Brazilian maestro, here with deep-groove Tropicalia.

Arthur Verocai’s 1972 debut album is a masterpiece that blends ‘60s Tropicalia with lush jazz, funk, soul, samba and bossa nova. While it was overlooked in an era when the Brazilian military government was cracking down on creative expression, today, you can pick up an original pressing on Discogs for about $4,000.

Verocai put aside his artistic ambitions for years and spent his workdays composing ad jingles. By the 2000s he was recording again, and hip-hop legends like MF Doom were sampling his grooves. Eventually, Verocai finally got the chance to play his debut LP live, with a 30-piece orchestra. Producer Cut Chemist was in the audience. Afterwards he told NPR Radio, it ‘was one of the best shows LA has ever seen’.

Now the 78-year-old maestro is making his way to RISING to mobilise the Rio rhythm.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, we are sorry to advise that Arthur Verocai’s concert on Friday 7 June as part of RISING has been cancelled. We are currently in the process of notifying ticket holders.
