Selby & Friends – A Matter of Heritage

A Matter of Heritage

Presented by Selby & Friends (Mica Productions)

Details

Selby and Friends explores the influences of heritage and culture on chamber music composers.

About the concert

Presenting a delightful program that shines a light on the incredible diversity of chamber music through the influence of four composers of the country of birth, customs, culture and heritage. Artistic Director and pianist Kathryn Selby welcome her guest artists, English violinist Elizabeth Layton and teenage cellist Benett Tsai. Originally-scheduled violinist Grace Clifford has had to withdraw due to injury, and Elizabeth Layton is graciously stepping in to take her place.

The virtuosic duo Passacaglia, based on ‘Passacaille’ (No.6) from Suite in G minor, HWV 432 by Handel, arranged for violin and cello by Johan Halvorsen, opens this fascinating program, followed by the Debussy Cello Sonata. Nigel Westlake, one of Australia’s most beloved composers, is programmed again for this season with his 2003 Piano Trio, written for the Macquarie Trio. Nigel Westlake is revered for his stunning atmospheric work, to great acclaim. The program culminates in the Smetana Piano Trio, a poem of love to the composer’s little daughter. This is truly a program to be savoured.
