With applications for the 2025 Accelerando Program now open, we caught up with program alumni, Izaak Agnew.
Studying Jazz and Improvisation at Monash University, he is a versatile drummer forging his own creative path in the industry. As part of the Accelerando program, Izaak was involved in industry workshops, instrumental lessons, mentor sessions and a performance in the Primrose Potter Salon.
When were you part of the Accelerando program?
I took part in the Accelerando program in 2023 during my last year of school.
What are you doing now?
I am currently studying at Monash University, in the Jazz and Improvisation stream. I also teach drums at Maribyrnong College, and gig with 3 different local Melbourne bands. I have also been fortunate enough to tour different Australian areas with a local Melbourne Ska band (east coast of Australia, Adelaide, and New South Wales).
When did you first start playing?
I first began playing at the age of 5 but didn't officially get lessons until late 2022.
Who are your musical heroes?
My musical heroes are all drummers. I aspire to perform similarly to the likes of Dave Weckl and Dennis Chambers in my own projects, however recently being surrounded by drummers in a jazz course, have taken likings to drummers like Max Roach, Tony Williams, Jack DeJohnette and John Riley.
What has been your performance highlight so far?
Some of my performance highlights have been the tours I went on, playing in 3 Top Class programs, and the Monash Uni recitals, including performances at the Paris Cat. Another highlight would be playing at the Accelerando end of year recital, as well as the Making Waves concert for original compositions held by Virtual Schools Victoria.
What did you enjoy the most about the Accelerando program?
The thing I enjoyed most about the program was the outstanding drum teachers I got to gain knowledge from (Darryn Farrugia and Tony Floyd), as well as my other Accelerando participants. I was able to make strong connections with the members, and still remain in contact with them, as well as having them as music connections in Melbourne.
What skills did you gain from having sessions with some of Australia's top performers and educators?
The skills I gained were seriously incredible. I came from a regional town (Warrnambool) that had one teacher who had moved away, so from having no teacher to having incredible mentors was a serious benefit to my improvement. I was able to gain so much knowledge regarding my own skill, and how to improve and expand my abilities to be a better performer. I also was able to gain insight into the Melbourne music scene, tips and tricks on how to obtain and maintain gigs, as well as being a better person in the industry. Overall, these teachers were able to help me become a better performer, and a better connection to others in the music scene.
What is next for you in your music journey?
I will continue to study and enhance my skills further, as well as teach and perform in Melbourne. After my Undergrad course, I will aim to complete a master's degree in teaching and be able to gain a full-time job from there, whilst continuing my own projects and compositions.
Why should students apply for Accelerando in 2026?
Students should apply for Accelerando to improve themselves, make connections, and create some incredible, long-lasting memories. Whether you have been playing your instrument for ten years or one year, applying for the Accelerando program is one hundred percent worth it. You never truly know where music can take you in life, but the Accelerando program can help you find what it is that you want to do and gain the skills to get there!
