Technical Manager - Fixed Term
Classification is Melbourne Recital Centre EA 2021-2024 Grade 5.1.1 + superannuation guarantee.
The primary purpose of the Technical Manager is essential operational and technical support to the Head of Operations, the Operations department, and the wider Organisation in the planning and delivery of live events. This role manages the day-to-day outputs of the technical team and technical requirements, ensuring the safe, efficient, and high-quality execution of all technical elements across sound, lighting, staging, and audiovisual systems.
Working closely with internal colleagues and external contacts, the Technical Manager plays a central role in managing workflows, schedules, budgets, and resources to support the seamless integration of production components. Clear communication, collaboration and staff management are key aspects of the role, helping to align technical operations with artistic, logistical, and key business objectives.
The Technical Manager ensures that all technical operations comply with statutory Workplace Health and Safety obligations, maintaining a strong focus on safe work practices, risk management, and continuous improvement. In addition, the role actively contributes to the organisation's multi-year production asset management program, supporting the strategic planning, procurement, maintenance, and lifecycle tracking of technical equipment and infrastructure to ensure long-term capability and sustainability.
The successful candidate will have experience and skills in the following:
- Proven people management skills including goal setting, coaching, performance management, and team consultation with the ability to manage change and shifting priorities to meet deadlines
- Demonstrated budget management and project management experience, including cost control and expenditure monitoring
- Demonstrated expertise and transferable skills in technical production for performing arts venues or organisations
- Specific knowledge of music presentation across classical and contemporary genres, including production requirements
- Broad technical knowledge across audio, lighting, projection, audio-visual, rigging, and staging disciplines
- Proficient in WHS management, including EVAC processes and event production compliance obligations
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to engage effectively at all levels
- Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills with capacity to build partnerships, forge trust, and maintain professional relationships across internal and external stakeholders
- High standards of personal presentation
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and ability to master MRC's venue management and rostering systems (training provided)
- Highly organised with demonstrated capacity to prioritize workloads, work independently under pressure, and meet deadlines in a multi-task environment
- Strong problem-solving abilities and initiative
- Ability to work at heights, good colour vision and hearing, and adequate fitness level for technical production work
