Stephen McIntyre

Beethoven’s farewell to the piano, performed by one of Australia’s greatest players.

A student of Nadia Boulanger and Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, Stephen McIntyre AM is one of Australia’s most eminent pianists and teachers. Returning to the Primrose Potter Salon, he brings a lifetime of musical wisdom to some of the most profound music ever written for the piano in a program that resonates with our season theme of First Songs/Last Songs.

Beethoven wrote his final three piano sonatas between 1820 and 1822, when he was almost completely deaf. When heard together, they feel like a single journey. His Op.109 moves from flowing warmth to stormy energy before settling into a set of gentle variations, while his Op.110 includes a sorrowful, song-like lament, followed by a fugue that builds to a radiant close. Finally, in just two movements, the Op.111 begins in a storm and ends in an unhurried, almost weightless calm.

This concert is part of our Chamber of the Heart series. Chamber of the Heart is made possible thanks to the generosity of the Alan and Mary-Louise Archibald Foundation.
