Jakub Jakowicz + Timo-Veikko Valve + Paavali Jumppanen

Borders – Great piano trios by Tchaikovsky, Kuula, Panufnik.
Three of the finest chamber musicians of their generation come together for an evening that crosses borders and centuries. Polish violinist Jakub Jakowicz, a member of the celebrated Zehetmair Quartet, is joined by Timo-Veikko Valve, Principal Cello of the Australian Chamber Orchestra since 2006, and fellow Finn Paavali Jumppanen, celebrated for his recordings of both Beethoven and Boulez, and recently completed tenure as Artistic Director of the Australian National Academy of Music.
The evening begins with the folk-inflected warmth of Kuula's Piano Trio, before the tension of Panufnik's trio offers a striking contrast. The evening closes with Tchaikovsky's monumental Piano Trio in A minor – written in memory of his mentor Nikolai Rubinstein, and one of the most deeply felt elegies in the chamber repertoire. Grief, memory and virtuosity combine in a trio for the ages.
Duration: 2 hours (incl. interval). Please note, running times are approximate and subject to change.
