Presented by Melbourne Recital Centre
Lawrence Power + Simon Crawford-Phillips with Yael Stone

A performance where sound and story are inseparable.
British violist Lawrence Power, one of the great voices of his instrument, returns to Melbourne Recital Centre for a program built on one idea: literature has always been a touchpaper for great music. Hailed by the New York Times as 'a musician on a mission to make us pay attention to the viola,' Power is joined by longtime collaborator Simon Crawford-Phillips, his trusted partner at the piano for over two decades, and actress Yael Stone for this evening of beautiful music-driven storytelling
Brett Dean's Rooms of Elsinore and Berlioz's La Mort d'Ophélie summon the ghosts of Hamlet, before Hans Christian Andersen’s tale 'The Ice-Maiden' is revealed in Stravinsky's balletic score. The program returns to Shakespeare with excerpts from Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet, tracing the arc from young love to devastation. Be enchanted by Yael Stone – the acclaimed Australian actress best known internationally for Orange Is the New Black – who brings poetry and character into the concert hall and breathes life into these much-loved stories.
Duration: 2 hours (incl. interval). Please note, running times are approximate and subject to change.
