Evening Lights: Leonkoro Quartet + Umberto Clerici

The lion-hearted ensemble returns to perform Schubert's final masterpiece.

To conclude the 2027 Evening Lights series: a program that is the epitome of First Songs, Last Songs, incorporating some of the finest of all string works. Berlin's Leonkoro Quartet returns to Melbourne, joined by much-loved cellist Umberto Clerici.

The evening opens with the sublime stillness of Barber's Adagio, before the exuberant youth of Mendelssohn's First Quartet – written when the composer was just eighteen – shifts the mood entirely. To close: Schubert's String Quintet, the last chamber work he completed before his death, and one of the most treasured works in the chamber repertoire. Written for two cellos rather than the usual two violas, it gives the ensemble an unusually rich, dark warmth, with Clerici joining the Quartet to offer his decades of experience to the mix. Leonkoro – winners of the Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition and praised by Alfred Brendel as 'already one of the finest' – bring their full authority to a work that has moved audiences for two centuries.
