Benjamin Appl – Sound of Silence

Witness a voice that ‘belongs to the last of the old great masters of song’ (Süddeutsche Zeitung).
Internationally acclaimed baritone Benjamin Appl is celebrated for a voice that ‘belongs to the last of the old great masters of song’ (Süddeutsche Zeitung). A former BBC New Generation Artist (2014-16) and Wigmore Hall Emerging Artist, Benjamin was named Gramophone Award Young Artist of the Year in 2016. Following captivating performances at Ravinia, Schubertiade Schwarzenberg, the Elbphilharmonie, and Carnegie Hall, Appl brings his artistry to the intimate surrounds of the Primrose Potter Salon.
Joined by renowned English pianist Sholto Kynoch, the duo presents a program that explores silence and introspection. At its heart is Schumann’s Liederkreis, Op.39, which sets poems by Joseph von Eichendorff, with silence and a longing for peace felt far beyond the song ‘Die Stille’ (‘The Silence’). Songs by Schubert thread through the evening, alongside Gregorian chant, the Baroque masters Monteverdi, Bach and Stölzel, and songs by Mendelssohn, Wolf, Strauss, Ives and MacMillan.
Duration: 1 hour 30 mins. Please note, running times are approximate and subject to change.
