Mostly Mozart – Play with Fire

From spark to inferno.

Fire has long sparked inspiration for history's great writers. From the metaphore of cleansing, to its great destructive power, watch as musicians from the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) and director Sharon Grigoryan (Associate Principal Cello of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra) play with fire in this Thursday morning performance.

With radiant energy, Haydn's Symphony No.59 - aptly nicknamed Fire - opens the performance, crackling with dramatic, restless, and surprising force. With the scene set, the primal power of De Falla's Danza ritual del fuego (Ritual Fire Dance) brings audiences a fiery ornamented piece from a rarely heard ballet by the intriguing Spanish composer. Exploding with bursts of colour, Debussy's Feux d'artifice seamlessly leads into the mystical intensity and blazing climax of Scriabin's Vers la flamme.

Written in honour of his childhood friend's elevation to nobility, Mozart's fiery and forceful 'Haffner' Symphony closes the morning. From the opening moments right through to the dazzling finale, Mozart presents his own brand of fire - not one of destruction but radiance, celebration, and energising brilliance.
