Mostly Mozart - Serenades and Nocturnes

A morning of night music with Natalie Chee.

After more than two decades leading some of Europe’s finest orchestras, including the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the Last Night of the Proms, violinist Natalie Chee has come home as Concertmaster of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Here, the former ABC Young Performer of the Year directs the ANAM Musicians through a program with a quiet, nocturnal glow.

The morning begins with a musical puzzle: the tender slow movement of Mozart’s Piano Sonata in F, followed by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt’s Mozart-Adagio, which presents the same music again, shared between violin, cello and piano. Pärt wrote it in 1992 as a farewell to a close friend, the violinist Oleg Kagan, a celebrated Mozart player. Hear the original, then hear it dreamed anew.

From there, the program turns to music inspired by the night. Lili Boulanger’s Nocturne is a dreamy night-piece by the first woman to win France’s Prix de Rome, and Haydn’s Symphony No.8, nicknamed Le Soir (The Evening), includes a musical thunderstorm. Mozart’s Serenata Notturna, literally a ‘night serenade,’ closes the morning with a playful back-and-forth between a small group of soloists and the larger ensemble.
