Mostly Mozart - Dreams

From Twinkle, Twinkle to one of Mozart's greatest symphonies.
The morning opens with a tune familiar to many: Mozart’s variations on the French folk song ‘Ah! vous dirai-je, Maman’ uses the melody that English speakers know as ‘Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.’ Originally written for piano, the variations are reimagined here for ensemble, with the nursery favourite transformed into something full of sparkle.
A soothing mood runs through the Monday morning performance: the lullaby ‘Nana’ from Manuel de Falla’s Spanish folk-song settings, a tender aria from Mozart’s unfinished opera Zaide, and music by Melbourne-born composer Linda Phillips, who lived to 103 and whose songs were championed by Dame Joan Sutherland. Arvo Pärt’s Fratres, hypnotic and bell-like, adds an early moment of stillness.
Led by ANAM faculty violist Caroline Henbest and violinist Zoë Black, the morning ends with Mozart’s Symphony No.29. Written when he was just eighteen, it is a symphony of warmth, wit and youthful confidence, and a reminder that his genius arrived early.
Duration: 1 hour 10 mins (no interval). Please note, running times are approximate and subject to change.
