Presented by Melbourne Recital Centre & the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM)
Mostly Mozart - Gran Partita

The music that stole the show in Amadeus.
Two of ANAM’s own faculty, trombonist Colin Prichard and clarinettist David Thomas (ANAM’s Head of Woodwind), lead a morning celebrating brass and wind instruments.
The program begins with a burst of Italian drama: the overture to Verdi’s opera La forza del destino (The Force of Destiny), reimagined for brass ensemble. Next comes the galloping final movement of Mozart’s Horn Concerto No.4, written for his friend, the horn player Joseph Leutgeb, and full of the spirit of the hunt.
The main event is Mozart’s Gran Partita, a serenade for twelve wind instruments and a double bass. Traditionally a lighter form of entertainment, this serenade is far grander, with seven movements. Its slow movement is one of Mozart’s most celebrated, and it found a new audience in the film Amadeus, where it moves Mozart’s rival, Salieri, to awe. Powerful even on screen, it comes fully to life in the unrivalled acoustics of the Elisabeth Murdoch Hall.
Duration: 1 hour 10 mins (no interval). Please note, running times are approximate and subject to change.
