Serenade: Mozart & Brahms

Exchanging sweet nothings, the flute and harp feel as if they float above the orchestra.
Mozart’s Concerto for Flute and Harp sees a delicate dialogue between the two solo instruments; phrases glide back and forth, floating above the orchestral strings. It’s a delightful conversation that the audience has become privy to – one of understated elegance, untouched by urgency.
The MSO shines a light inward on the incredible talent of some of our own musicians. Here the solo roles are taken by the MSO's Principal Flute Prudence Davis and Principal Harp, Yinuo Mu.
The program begins with a theatrical, energetic opener, Rossini’s overture to his opera, L’Italiani in Algeri.
Brahms’s first serenade began its life as a nine-piece chamber ensemble work, before the most influential violinist of the day, Joseph Joachim, persuaded the composer to score it for full orchestra. It’s a glimpse into Brahms’s sweeping symphonies that were to come, but maintains a more intimate sound world; one of bucolic charm, flowing melodies and an unhurried sense of contentment.
