MSO Principal Oboe Johannes Grosso takes centre stage.
Anne Cawrse's work for string orchestra explores the idea that struggle is necessary for growth, portraying "falling upward" as a hard-won climb that must embrace hardship before earning eventual flight.
Then Johannes Grosso steps into the solo role for Strauss’ Oboe Concerto. Strauss puts the oboe on show straight away, like an aria from one of his famed operas, singing a soaring line. Composed in 1945, the Oboe Concerto intertwines agile solo sections and lush orchestral textures, expressing quiet reflection and the sunlit dawning of a new day at the end of World War II.
Schumann's Third Symphony was inspired by the flowing Rhine river and the great cathedral of Cologne, moving between lyrical melodies and majestic fanfares fitting for a ceremonious occasion.
