The Double Bass: Rota & Stravinsky

The best supporting actor steps into the spotlight.

The double bass is one of the rarest concerto instruments to appear in the mainstream repertoire and is notoriously difficult to master.

It’s one of the reasons Nino Rota's Divertimento is such a novelty: it turns the orchestra's largest string instrument into the star of the show.

Known for his work as a film composer (The Godfather and The Godfather Part II, War and Peace and various Fellini films), Rota was respected for his fusion of classical composition with modern sensibilities. Rather than a display of pure virtuosity, the Divertimento is more nuanced; whimsical while also technically dazzling. In this program, it’s Principal Double Bass Jonathon Coco who takes on this inimitable, entertaining work.

Cybec Assistant Conductor Daniel Corvaia leads this program, which also features Britten’s youthful Simple Symphony and the Pulcinella suite from Stravinsky's 1920 ballet.

Pulcinella is the same commedia dell’arte character who evolved into England's Punch of Punch and Judy fame - a mischievous trickster whose comic personality animates the music throughout. This sly humour and Stravinsky’s sophisticated orchestration results in a distinctly modern sound, and a light-hearted and lively experience for an audience.
