Myth made music.
Performed by an expanded chamber ensemble, this vibrant program traverses the weird and the wonderful imaginations of today's great musical storytellers.
The composer behind the magical worlds of Studio Ghibli, Joe Hisaishi has transported generations of listeners into realms of wonder and imagination. In its Australian premiere, Two Dances for Large Ensemble unfolds like a living dream - a work born of limitation yet brimming with rhythm and endless vitality.
Leading this journey through the mythic and the surreal, John Adams's uncanny Gnarly Buttons offers a witty and poignant reflection on memory, at once humorous and deeply moving, while a new arrangement of Debussy's Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune, reimagined in the brilliantly unpredictable style of Australian composer Matthew Hindson, brings a vivid perspective to an enigmatic classic.
The program also features a world premiere by the formidable UK composer Anna Clyne, whose Concerto for Horn and Strings draws on voices from ancient lore and is performed by guest soloist Nico Fleury, Principal Horn of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
Duration: 1 hour 30 mins (no interval). Please note, running times are approximate and subject to change.
