Pieter Wispelwey with Piers Lane – Night II

A trilogy through time.
Enter a realm where Romantic lyricism meets modernist exploration as Pieter Wispelwey and Piers Lane bridge the delicate balance between tradition and transformation.
Franz Schubert's Arpeggione Sonata, written for the now extinct instrument, enters a new era on the cello. The gentle dialogue between instruments, embodying Schubert’s intimate style, then flows into Felix Mendelssohn's high-spirited Second Cello Sonata, a celebration of Romantic joy with a fiery finale.
At the program's heart lies Benjamin Britten's Second Cello Suite, the darkest and most architecturally complex of the trilogy. Where Schubert and Mendelssohn offer flowing melodies and joyful energy, Britten's music conveys deeper shadows.
Wispelwey brings these works to vivid life, showing how each composer built on what came before them while adding their own unique voice. Under his bow, you'll hear not just beautiful music, but a conversation across centuries; each piece responding to and transforming the eras before their own.
