Madrigals of Love and War

A revolutionary masterpiece: Monteverdi's great landmark of classical music.
Monteverdi's Eighth Book of Madrigals stands as one of the great landmarks of classical music. Published in 1638, it transformed the madrigal from an intimate vocal form into something vividly dramatic and theatrical, pointing directly towards the birth of opera itself.
Monteverdi was obsessed with finding musical means to express emotional states, and his Eighth Book of Madrigals is almost a catalogue of human feeling: yearning, ecstasy, tenderness, anger, courage, despair, mourning.
At its heart are two of Monteverdi's most celebrated masterpieces: Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda, a gripping musical drama of love and conflict, and the hauntingly beautiful Lamento della Ninfa, one of the most moving laments in all of music. Presented in a lightly staged performance, this production will bring Monteverdi's extraordinary world of love, war, passion and loss vividly to life.
