Journey from France to Soviet-era Armenia and the Slovak lands of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
The music of Ravel, Babajanyan and Dvořák reveals a shared love of home and place, drawing on folk traditions, atmosphere and rhythm to create three distinctive musical worlds.
Maurice Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin looks achingly to the past while brimming with modernity, weaving contemporary harmonies with Baroque forms in tribute to friends lost during the First World War. A gorgeous arrangement of the orchestral suite for piano trio brings new intimacy to this much-loved work.
The rarely heard Babajanyan Piano Trio, chosen for the program by both guest string artists, showcases the brilliance of a composer who counted Oistrakh and Knushevitsky among his close contemporaries. Completing the journey is Dvořák’s immortal Dumky Trio, a work rich with folk influence, shifting moods and unmistakable warmth.
