The Necks

'A post-jazz, post-rock, post-everything sonic experience that has few parallels or rivals.' - The Guardian
Hailed as the 'greatest trio on earth' by The New York Times, The Necks are one of the most revered cult bands of our time. Known for their hypnotic live performances and sprawling, improvisational works that slowly unravel, shift, and metamorphose — no two shows are ever the same. Marking an incredible 39 years into their career, The Necks continue to surprise with their distinct mix of experimental jazz and meditative minimalism.
Following a recent sold-out concert at Melbourne Recital Centre, the enigmatic trio returns to perform their 20th full-length release, Disquiet. Meticulously recorded and sculpted, the four extended pieces on Disquiet see Tony Buck, Chris Abrahams, and Lloyd Swanton pushing at the outer edges of their collective intuition, building and dismantling structures with microscopic focus and unmatched intentionality.
Praise for The Necks
'Entirely new and entirely now… They produce a post-jazz, post-rock, post-everything sonic experience that has few parallels or rivals.' - The Guardian
'No group in creative music is quite like the Australian trio, whose modal and minimalist performances extend a single idea to infinity.' - The Wire Magazine
'…feels like plunging into a warm bath… Listen to how Lloyd Swanton's double bass is played with an alluring firmness that's rounded out by Chris Abrahams' organ flourishes. The only sound that erupts from this homogeneous space is Tony Buck's occasional strike of a cymbal bell; its similarity to that of a blacksmith's hammer is a reminder of The Necks' endlessly irresistible and impossibly tight improvisations.' - NPR Music

About the Artists
The Necks are one of the great cult bands of the world. Chris Abrahams (piano) Tony Buck (drums) and Lloyd Swanton (bass) conjure a chemistry together that defies description in orthodox terms. The deceptive simplicity of their music throws forth new charms on each hearing. Not entirely avant-garde, nor minimalist, nor ambient, nor jazz, the music of The Necks is unique in the world today.
Formed in Sydney in 1987, they have operated with the same line-up for an extraordinary thirty-nine years straight. The Necks have been a regular feature on the European and US concert scenes for decades and have featured in all major music publications. They could be seen as one of Australia's most significant and acclaimed musical exports. The Necks have collaborated with Brian Eno, Underworld, Swans, and Back to Back Theatre, as well as composing the score to the legendary Australian feature film The Boys. They have received multiple awards, culminating in the 2019 Richard Gill Award for Distinguished Services to Australian Music.
