The Taxithi Project – The Past is a Place

Memories through song.
It might be 1978 in Prahran, 1964 in Footscray, or 1956 in Collingwood: whichever the year, Greek families arrive in their thousands, seeking a better life in Australia. In the backstreets of inner-city suburbs, memories and music drift from open windows and flyscreen doors.
Greek records crossed oceans, carrying songs of war-torn streets, love and longing, defiance, grief and joy. They soothed homesick hearts and became the soundtrack to a new life, far from home.
The Ταξίδι Project returns to that past through stories and music shaped by the Greek-Australian experience. It celebrates this rich legacy with the unforgettable works of composers Manos Hatzidakis, Mikis Theodorakis, Manos Loïzos and Mimis Plessas and the legendary voices of Haris Alexiou, George Dalaras, Yiannis Parios and Tzeni Vanou.
Celebrating these songs are vocalist Helen Yotis, bouzouki master Jacob Papadopoulos and Andrew Patterson on piano. The past is a place, carrying memories through song.
