Presented by Melbourne Recital Centre

Details

A shared language of peace and stillness.

Riley Lee and Marshall McGuire first performed together over 25 years ago. Riley Lee began playing the shakuhachi in Japan in 1971, under the guidance of Chikuho Sakai II and Katsuya Yokoyama and was the first non-Japanese to attain Grand Master (dai shihan) rank in shakuhachi. Marshall McGuire is a leading Australian harpist, teacher and conductor and Director of Programming at Melbourne Recital Centre.

About the concert

Their performance in Primrose Potter Salon features works from their album Spring Sea and Floating World, alongside works from Riley’s acclaimed release, Hildegard. The unique combination of these two ancient instruments – representing Eastern and Western musical traditions – has inspired and delighted audiences in Australia and the world.

A unique opportunity to experience two talented musicians discovering a shared language of peace and stillness.

Praise for the artists

‘…warm, intensely oriental sounds of the shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute) with the cool, precise sounds of Marshall McGuire’s classical harp. The results are astonishingly beautiful. The choice of music is inspired.’ The Sydney Morning Herald
