Located in Eltham (North-Eastern suburb), just 35 minutes from Melbourne’s CBD, Montsalvat is a picturesque collection of mud brick buildings, galleries and artist studios nestled amongst 5 hectares of gardens boasting a medieval old-world feel.

Founded by the artist, architect and philosopher Justus Jörgensen and his friends in 1935, Montsalvat is Australia’s oldest artists’ colony and home to practising artists. It remains to this day a working not-for-profit arts centre regularly programming art exhibitions, workshops, markets, and musical performances.

Set in 12 acres of established gardens, the historic buildings include charming mud brick cottages and the impressive Great Hall, built in local stone with great carved limestone windows which hark back to the French Gothic that had so inspired Jörgensen. The Great Hall is built much in the style of a medieval French provincial hall and is now one of Melbourne’s iconic heritage buildings.

Against a natural backdrop of gardens, lakes and the occasional peacock or two, Montsalvat is a relaxing and inviting location to spend an afternoon, indulge in a delicious meal or enjoy a musical performance.
